Set in Emily's magic shop, the show centres around the various articles that she brings in to mend, clean and put in good order, mainly by having encouraging songs and stories made up about them. The inhabitants of the shop window Madeleine the rag doll, Gabriel the toad, professor Yaffle the wooden woodpecker, the mice who live on the mouse organ and of course Bagpuss himself, the sleepy, saggy, old cloth cat who presides over the proceedings have become immensely well known and well loved during the many years on british television. The series was shown a total of twenty seven times in the 1970s and 80s.
